What A Difference Indifference Makes

I Wonder If She Colors Her Hair Now Ask myself, so why should I care now? Not knowing’s too much to bear now I accept I haven’t a prayer now I wonder if she colors her hair now Does she still have kindness to spare now? Would we still have stories to share now? Picturing the style she would wear now I wonder if she colors her hair now I knew her to let things happen naturally Never someone who would give in easily But I’ve seen so many at some point give in Running far away from people they have been Track her down? No, I wouldn’t dare now To the past I shouldn’t compare now Who’s marching to the beat of her snare now I wonder if she colors her hair now I bet she looks even more beautiful completely grey Just like Emmylou on any given day Is it time for clearing the air now? Damage done I cannot repair now I am stuck with too much despair now I wonder if she colors her hair now I wonder if she colors her hair now
2.
You Really Got Meh Remembering when you were so inspired And now you behave as if you’re retired It’s not A-OK I say you really got meh Where are the days that were called salad? You no longer rock, all you do is ballad Are you on delay? I say you really got meh No more cheering me up You only bring me straight down No more filling the cup You only frown And dress in brown There was a time all you did was thrilling But now your will doesn’t seem too willing There’s no time to play I say you really got meh Is this only a phase? Or is this you from now on? Seems those happier days Are once upon A time now gone Where has it gone all that vim and vigor You wouldn’t think twice, you’d just pull the trigger No questions to weigh I say you really got meh You really got meh You really got meh Is a brand new purple patch Just around the corner You never met your match The furthest thing from a scorner
3.
What No One Is Saying What you long to hear seems like you would’ve heard by now If there was a chance it would’ve occurred by now It is interesting how disinterested they can be Even though you’ve tried every trick from A to Z All those plans that no one is okaying It’s apparent fate is not obeying It’s time to listen to what no one is saying Close attention is what no one’s paying Where’s the takers for what you’re displaying? It’s time to listen to what no one is saying When all they can say is “no comment” that says a lot How can you believe that you still have a good shot? You’re in the game but no else is playing You crashed the party now you’re overstaying It’s time to listen to what no one is saying You try to hide it though we know you’re greying All your favorite clothes are badly fraying It’s time to listen to what no one is saying There’s other options that you should be weighing Could it be the time you started praying? It’s time to listen to what no one is saying No one is saying Action may speak louder than words, but no one’s giving you second takes There’s a lesson you should have learned, what a difference indifference makes What a difference indifference makes What a difference indifference makes What a difference indifference makes
4.
The Days Are Long But The Years Fly Past The days are long but the years fly past The days are long The days are long but the years fly past The days are long It sure seems like there is a stopwatch that no one can remember to stop Soon will be the time when what you’re holding onto is gonna drop And no one will be willing to swap Those yesterdays that I remember when I think hard are yesteryears Time may be all booked but there’s always gonna be time for tears Right out of the blue it appears The days are long but the years fly past The days are long Father Time the iconoclast His ways are wrong They say “live in the moment” and they sing “let’s live for today” We obsess on the past because the future has nothing to say Counting down only should be done on new year’s eve Since it only reminds us of what we didn’t achieve Those years ago now have been feeling like they were just the other day That mean calendar seems to have the wrong dates on display Time will not wait and won’t stay The days are long but the years fly past The days are long The ever shrinking supporting cast The ways are wrong The days are long but the years fly past The days are long With brand new things that you won’t outlast The ways are wrong
5.
Go Down In Mystery Walking paths that will never cross Loved the game, now accepting the loss Did we know what would be at stake? Was there a chance for some chances to take? Were we too afraid to attempt Such a scary experiment Another tale of what could’ve been that wouldn’t be I guess we’ll go down in mystery Safe and sound with no covers blown Cautiously stayed inside the unknown Acknowledgement was our biggest fear We were not ever heard loud and clear Never spoke of unspoken things Will our hearts stay unbroken things? Another tale of what could’ve been that wouldn’t be I guess we’ll go down in mystery Another tragedy that needn’t end so tragically I guess we’ll go down in mystery , in mystery Did you ever wish we gave it a try like I did? Did you settle for smaller fish to fry like I did ? Was there beauty that you chose to deny like I did? Did you focus on a lie to buy like I did?
6.
Try Too Hard Or Phone It In We all know how losing battles will end So I can’t find a reason to start one There are actions I might try to defend But no reason I give is a smart one Should I go down attempting a swing Or is energy meant for conserving You will hear that you can do anything But you’ll only get what you’re deserving As I plan on ways to start what I never begin I wonder if it’s worse to try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in E for effort really isn’t a grade It’s a letter that no one desires Play along because that’s how it is played Roll along ’til you wear out those tires Do I keep it up or down, where do I leave my chin? I wonder if it’s worse to try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in 100 percent or complete indifference Does it even make a difference? To give it your all but to show disinterest Is in everybody’s interest Do I give my heart and soul or be the man made of tin? I wonder if it’s worse to try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in To try too hard or to phone it in
7.
They Leave In So Many Ways You might hear the slamming of the door Or the quiet steps across the floor They leave in so many ways With departing words you won’t forget While you still believe it’s just a threat They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways Only the memory stays You’ll be in a daze for days As they leave in so many ways Now you’re someone that they have outgrown You will wonder how long have they known They leave in so many ways When they exit grandly it’s no fun You will play The Beatles’ For No One They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways With timing that never obeys You’ll be in a daze for days As they leave in so many ways Some will fade away It’s heartbreak on layaway The trick of vanishing The art of banishing Sometimes it is done and unannounced You’ll feel like the bouncer who’s been bounced They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways They leave in so many ways
8.
The Do-Gooder She’s constantly making sure that the right thing’s done That’s why if you ask around you’ll hear she’s no fun She’s wrongly mistaken for a downright fool Since being the kindest soul is her golden rule No one has ever understood her She’s the do-gooder She’s the do-gooder Condemned with a tenderness that she can’t reverse They ask why she’s not a nun or a loving nurse Just trying to be herself is an endless plight She’s hearing the things they say but what’s one more slight No one has ever understood her She’s the do-gooder She’s the do-gooder She wants to offer her heart But it’s only wanted by heartless ones Her hopes are falling apart But she is sure to stick to her guns She meets another pussy-footer She’s the do-gooder She’s the do-gooder She’s the do-gooder
9.
When Promises Turn Into Lies When promises turn into lies Most times it comes as no surprise It takes a while to realize When promises turn into lies You’ll have an explanation that almost no one buys To try and make another can not be more unwise There will be a lot of damage you’ll try to minimize Don’t try to work it all out, there is no compromise When promises turn into lies Don’t think you can apologize You try your best but can’t disguise When promises turn into lies If there’s one thing you should vow, it's not to make a vow There’s really only so much that our hearts will allow There are some things when broken can not be fixed again Like when a song’s a classic it should not be mixed again As the disenchantment lingers They’ll wonder if you crossed your heart or your fingers When promises turn into lies When promises turn into lies When promises turn into lies
10.
Isn’t It Great? Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when you finally move on? Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when the spell is gone? All the needing and the wanting You no longer need or want That belief that was so daunting Has turned out to never haunt What was called an obsession You can simply disregard It’s no more in your possession And all those cards you can discard Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when you finally move on? Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when you spot the con? You will think, “What was I thinking?” Don’t give it a second thought You rose before completely sinking That losing battle’s no longer fought You’ll see them in a new light And it isn’t flattering Yes you put up a good fight But it’s no longer mattering Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when you finally move on? Isn’t it great when you finally get over it? Isn’t it great when it’s all a yawn? The only bad part is you’ll wonder why it took so long And how could something so strong Come to be so wrong Isn’t it great?

about

What A Difference Indifference Makes is the first album John Dunbar has put out under his own name since 2020’s Oh Wellness. That’s not to imply he’s been lazing on sunny afternoons in the intervening time. He released two albums under his adventurous alter ego, Elvis Eno : A Startling Realization Of The Obvious in 2021 and Unwittingly in 2022. There were also two albums by his better known band, The John Sally Ride- Now Is Not A Great Time in 2021 and The Other Women, which came out at the very beginning of this year. Not to mention various one off singles along the way.

Dunbar has been known to give himself specialized guidelines when embarking on new albums to keep things fresh and challenging. This new album is no exception. During a radio interview he did while promoting The Other Women, the host pointed out that each song John chose to play by his favorite artists were their “piano songs". An astute observation. Dunbar recognized that he certainly had a soft spot for songs where the piano carried the instrumentation. With that in mind he decided to try and make an album of songs that could be fall under the category of “piano songs.". There are no guitars on the record, other than the bass. Although he ruined any chance of the album being reviewed in Guitar Player magazine, the results sound positively inspired. The songs carry Dunbar’s prototypical songwriting style, hooky melodies sung to particular lyrical observations. Just a glimpse at some of the song titles, I Wonder If She Colors Her Hair Now, You Really Got Meh, When Promises Turn Into Lies and The Days Are Long But The Years Fly Past, give you a slight hint as to what to expect upon listening.
