Third Guessing

We can see right where this is leading This could be what no one is needing Why do we feed into what needs no feeding? Can't deny what we are denying And we should try to stop what we're not trying There's a halt to be calling Right before we start falling Start letting go before we try to hold on Or tell each other so we aren't told on So we're putting an end to what hasn't yet begun Putting an end to what hasn't yet begun Do we have a fear of success here? Or are there other things we should confess here? All those words that we took back Will they sting when we look back? No need to read a thing or do any math We can both can see what's at the end of this path So we're putting an end to what hasn't yet begun Putting an end to what hasn't yet begun Putting an end to what hasn't yet begin Say goodnight before we make an evening of it Even if we both know how much we would love it.

They don't know what you're staying away from As you deflect They don't know when it's better to play dumb Or what to reject Mentioning the unmentionables And paying close attention to the minor flaws and major ills It isn't that they're not being gracious They're just being just Their views are far from mendacious You're forced to trust They disregard all delicacy Who knows why they feel the need to tell you all they think and see They'll tell you who you resemble Then your mind starts to tremble 'Cause strangers will tell you the truth Strangers will tell you the truth You learn what kind of impression You truly make Watch it lead to straight depression One you can't shake You won't hear one word that's a gem Now you know why you've been told that you should never talk to them After you hear them describing You'll soon be imbibing 'Cause strangers will tell you the truth Strangers will tell you the truth Their views are purely unslanted And new doubts are planted 'Cause strangers will tell you the truth Strangers will tell you the truth Honesty can be offending And will take years of mending 'Cause strangers will tell you the truth

Your plans I'm entertaining My interest isn't waning I can't make a decision right now I'll keep my options open I wonder how you're coping There's only so much I can allow I confess you're convincing But this won't be an easy thing I know of your intentions And everybody mentions That I better make the right call I'm sleeping on it nightly I'm looking so unsightly Am I heading straight for a fall? In my deep contemplation I believe that I'll never win Consider it considered, Consider me considerate Consider it considered, I promise I'll consider it As I keep consulting I hope I'm not insulting That's not my intention at all I tend to over-think things And all the stress that it brings Has me always dropping the ball Not deliberately deliberate One day I'll get the hang of it Consider it considered, Consider me considerate Consider it considered, I promise I'll consider it Please try not to get your hopes too high I'm known as quite an indecisive guy There are answers that I'm soon to find And when I do I'm bound to change my mind Consider it considered, Consider me considerate Consider it considered, I promise I'll consider it

Idealizing, Not Realizing, Unsurprising Highlights selective, Semi-corrective, So protective Soften the focus, The real truth would choke us, Hides what broke us Watch out for what nostalgia does You're longing for what never was Hard to explain this, Wise to dismiss It turns into sweet bliss Don't be perfecting, The art of inspecting Keep rejecting Watch out for what nostalgia does You're longing for what never was Watch out for what nostalgia does You're longing for what never was And soon enough you'll find There's no need to rewind And when the past is judged The clues are often fudged Watch out for what nostalgia does You're longing for what never was

Sullenly 03:53
It's gonna be one of the ten best days of the year So the weatherman said Maybe all the signs I'm waiting for will appear And I'll like what's ahead Distractions doing their very best to distract And I appreciate that I can not tell what's fiction or what's a fact Until you take your turn at bat Suddenly I'm feeling sullenly Going back over the things that couldn't be You can't be blamed for what you provoke in me Yes, the issue's all mine When it comes to you it seems the joke's on me And I will always be your punchline Suddenly I'm feeling sullenly Going back over the things that couldn't be I truly wish I didn't feel Such anguish That is all too real Suddenly I'm feeling sullenly Going back over the things that couldn't be
6.
Things I start always remain undone I lose what should be won Stick around, see all your hopes fall down Wave as you watch me drown You will be cursed with high hopes for me But you'll lose them eventually You'll be asking "What did I see?" 'Cause I can really disappoint you if you let me I can really disappoint you, wanna bet me? See the dumb moves and decisions made You'll never say "Well played" Your head will move always from side to side But you can't claim I lied First impressions just might impress Soon there's issues you must address I'm telling you so you won't have to guess I can really disappoint you if you let me I can really disappoint you, wanna bet me? 'Cause I can really disappoint you if you let me I can really disappoint you, wanna bet me?

Expectations Really should not be expected Reservations Booked but you'll still be rejected Counting on all the things That count you out We all know how it stings When you're in doubt Can you give up Something you never quite took up Can you live up To plans you never did cook up As you go straight from hope To hoping not When the end of the rope Is all you got In the land of "Is that all there is?" In the land of "Is that all there is?" Not allowed to expect more anymore Try your best to ignore what's not in store As we look back To times when we used to look forward Vows we took back Now what we reach for is lowered In the land of "Is that all there is?" In the land of "Is that all there is?" In the land of "Is that all there is?" In the land of "Is that all there is?" Little wins Start to feel like one big loss Stronger chins To withstand the double cross In the land of "Is that all there is?" In the land of "Is that all there is?"

Every sign I read is so misread Body language is a speech I dread Any wonder why I never get ahead Acceptance is a thing I can't accept I am not the person to elect For a letdown I am well and truly prepped Being welcomed isn't welcoming I would say rejection's more my thing I never suffer when you think I'm suffering Is it another fear of success? I know the way I'm always gonna guess The more I make of it makes it meaningless Seems I'm always stopping at the green I need at least to find an in-between On the wrong side is where I'll always lean Kind words go by in a blur They all translate to "no sir" 'Cause I won't take yes for an answer I prefer to have the shoulders cold I can never ever be cajoled High opinions of myself I do not hold i don't miss it when I am dismissed I am proud I'm never on the list You think by now someone would get the gist Kind words go by in a blur All my neuroses must confer 'Cause I won't take yes for an answer Kind words go by in a blur Approval doesn't cause a stir 'Cause I won't take yes for an answer The strange thing that is somehow true If there's something I don't want to do I'll have trouble saying no to you But I won't take yes for an answer

I saw your face on another woman, I saw your face on another woman But I don't think you'd ever dress that way I can't recall you saying yes that way I saw your face on another woman, I saw your face on another woman Giving me a look that you once gave Behaving as I wish you'd still behave I was about to call your name But then where would I place the blame? Good judgement's not my claim to fame I saw your face on another woman, I saw your face on another woman But the voice was not a perfect match I had a feeling there must be a catch I was about to call your name I'd only put myself to shame Guess I'm a keeper of the flame And the last time I saw you my eyes were closed I don't care to admit how I saw you posed Could it be once again I was seeing things Just when I was convinced I was freeing things I saw your face on another woman, I saw your face on another woman Glad I didn't take a second look Every ounce of my restraint it took I was about to call your name But then I guessed it was a game I've no idea what you became And that face is the one that once meant so much Which is just further proof that I don't know much But the rest of her was not like you at all in your heels you could still never be that tall I saw your face on another woman, I saw your face on another woman

She met him after she had finally woken from a long romantic slummber He met her rising from a great fall She was glad to hear his name was Ricky, she made sure she didn't lose his number It took a while, but he tore down her wall She worshipped Donald Fagen He treasured Ronald Reagan But their feelings were so vague then She thought he looked a bit like Walter Becker, more like Walter Becker as a banker He thought Steely Dan were just too pretentious With her blue eyes and her stylish blonde hair, she resembled every Fox News anchor And Reaganomics made her quite contentious She worshipped Donald Fagen He treasured Ronald Reagan How long will it plague them? Everybody said it would not last, Hey, nineteen years they've been together She voted for the GOP in '04 They are contradicting all the theories that exist about birds of a feather He sat through the film that was made with Al Gore She worshipped Donald Fagen He treasured Ronald Reagan Guess it never did plague them

I am filled with such uncertainty I can never answer certainly All my inclinations I don't trust All this indecision is a must I can't let the chips fall where they may Intuition's always kept at bay Third Guessing, Third Guessing I'm sure I'll never be too sure Third Guessing, Third Guessing It seems I never know the score Not to say that I don't hold out hope Hoping I can find a way to cope Third Guessing, Third Guessing Looking for the better choice Third Guessing, Third Guessing Can't shut up my inner voice So I over-think But I have to ask you, what's the harm? I don't write in ink And they say the third time is the charm Third Guessing, Third Guessing Each selection I regret Third Guessing, Third Guessing Like the first time we met

about

"The only attitude worthy of a superior man is to persist in an activity he recognizes is useless, to observe a discipline he knows is sterile, and to apply certain norms of philosophical and metaphysical thought that he considers utterly inconsequential." - Fernando Pessoa - The Book Of Disquiet
